Core Beliefs

Core beliefs are the huge underlying factor in BDD. The rituals and safety behaviours that preoccupy someone with BDD are a distraction from the core beliefs that cause of the disorder.

Examples of negative core beliefs or feelings:
I'm Defective, imperfect, bad = Self worth
I don't know, wrong = Reality, reason
I'm in danger, not safe = Security
I'm not good enough/Stupid (incompetent) = Links to Success
I'm not good enough (unlovable) = Links to Love
I'm powerless, I can't cope = Control
I'm unwanted, different = Belonging
Lack of trust = Consistency

Core Beliefs
A core belief is a belief you have about yourself e.g. "I'm not good enough". Core beliefs collectively determine who you think you are. A belief about other people is a supporting belief "People can't be trusted; they will always let me down". Supporting beliefs are a prediction or forecast about what others will do based on what others have done in the past. These statements are something we believe as 'the truth'/ 'just the way things are' about other people, the world, and ourselves.
